Yes, the Lava Studio Amp is a very innovative amp that theoretically sets new standards. I’ve owned it for 3.5 weeks and went through the entire Kickstarter process from the beginning. However, I don’t understand the guitar community’s completely uncritical view of it. Some of Lava Music’s actions are incomprehensible to me, and I’m surprised that no one is questioning them.
1. At the beginning, early supporters were offered a price advantage of 250 to 300 euros as an incentive to get involved. Now, the amp is already available new in stores for as little as 812 euros. The actual price advantage is only 113 euros.
2. The delivery times given at the beginning were more than
meager. Only after signing up were we given bits and pieces of information about the long process and delivery time.
3. The DAW is extremely unstable and, to be honest, a joke. Perhaps many people have hardly used any DAW apps before and therefore have no comparison with what has been standard on the market for years for just a few euros. Precise editing is virtually impossible. The touch controls are extremely frustrating, as they require incredibly fine motor skills, which is not enjoyable with a guitar in your arms. The cursor jumps uncontrollably to the beginning of the track when you stop.
Even though many people say that it’s just a beta version, that’s not really a good
reason to buy it. Because even if it’s beta, you’re still paying a lot of money for it.
4. Within two hours, I often have three to four crashes, regardless of whether it’s the rig, DAW, or AI track separation. It’s so unstable, I don’t understand how you can go to market like this and apparently everyone accepts it and doesn’t question it.
5. The browser doesn’t allow for much and often freezes. Difficult to use.
6. The sound from the small box is good. But also for guitar? It’s more reminiscent of a Bluetooth hi-fi box than a guitar amp. Yes, it’s also supposed to be used for listening to music, at least that’s how it’s advertised, but the drum tracks, for example, quickly start to pump at the appropriate volume when practicing. Hi-fi sound as a guitar amp?
7. And that brings us to one of the biggest handicaps and conceptual flaws. How can I build an amp with amplifier simulations and DAW without a foot switch to change the sound or start/stop function when practicing? I don’t get it.
Now many will say that Lava will surely improve on this. I’m curious to see what else is coming, but I’ve already had my experiences with a Lava and a Lava Me Spruce guitar.
The Bluetooth foot switches were completely impractical. Far too sluggish to work with seriously.
The stand with charging function was a complete design flaw. The guitar was so tightly wedged in that you had to hold the stand down on the floor when you wanted to take the guitar out.
None of this comes across as professional or well thought out. And that’s what’s happening again with the studio amp?
The concepts are good, but the implementation of the products is poor. I don’t think Lava is investing much time in already relaunched products, but rather in working on the next topic. And you’re stuck with gear that quickly becomes obsolete. An indispensable second input jack or channel, for example, cannot be retrofitted or created with an update. But it will inevitably have to happen if the concept is to have a future.
For example, after the big sales pitch, there were only sporadic promised enhancements for the Lava Me 4.
Don’t get me wrong, as I said, the concept is world-class, when the amp ist running, the rigsound are really good, comparing with my kemper or podgo. And it makes fun playing with it, but the way consumers are treated and the practical implementation don’t seem professional, or has that become the norm these days
In my world, I can’t afford to market half-finished products.
